San Vicente de la Sonsierra

Basílica of Our Lady of the Remedies

Construction began in 1715 under the design of Juan Bautista Arbaizar to replace another existing outside the town. Its architecture is of the neoclassical Renaissance with an octagonal dome, work of Pedro de Lejalde, enriched with the presence of the four evangelists carved in it.

The altarpiece is Baroque and well preserved gold work of Felix de Ortega and Sebastian de Portu (1738)

In the choir a stone carving is kept, possibly dated in the 11th or 12th century, which seems to come from Santa María de la Piscina.

The image of the patron saint, the Virgen de los Remedios, a fourteenth-century Gothic seated Virgin, becomes a fundamental reference point for local devotions and that legend has it that it was found coincidentally in the Aliende area (looking towards San Vicente de la Sonsierra) together with the Cristo de los Remedios de Briones (which looked towards Briones).

"The Virgin of the Remedies, is not bought or sold, which is lowered from the heavens and the Aliende appeared"
